It is not known if production has been impacted as a result of a movement by Peruvian demonstrators that have set Hochschild’s Inmaculada silver-gold mine in the Ayacucho Department in their sights.
Protestors blocked the entrance to the mine, the producer’s largest in Peru, on 27 October, the company confirmed to Reuters on 31 October. Officials for the company said the protestors are with the Casma Palla Palla community in the southern region.
Reuters noted that the demonstrators have not made any comments to the news wire service.
These kinds of protests – actions by impoverished indigenous communities against large mines – are commonplace in the country, and the demonstration is not the first for Inmaculada by this group, it told the service.
Per reports, President Pedro Castillo’s administration said last year it would wind down production at Inmaculada following pressure from local communities, though it later backtracked it decision.
Hochschild is currently eyeing plans to invest $4.4 billion in the mine to extend its life through 2042. The company owns the asset wholly and considers the mine its flagship property.
